In the darkness they sit, their pale skin in such contrast to the world around them that it appears to emit a glow of its own, soft and luminescent. Though the forest is silent, they move without a sound, gliding through the trees and along deep ravines with the careful concentration mastered over millennia.

Since the beginning of time, the brothers have walked these worlds- ever changing on the surface but remaining the same below. The trees fall, the buildings crumble, even the creatures fall back into the earth, not losing life, but giving it.

Eventually these trees too would be brought to the ground, their leaves long gone and the rough bark chipped away, weathered and broken. In time, the buildings would crumble, no longer standing proud but falling in on themselves like withered old men - all the wisdom and power of a life long lived, unfairly trapped in a hunched, withering body- a testament to time.

They stand together at the edge of the treeline, hidden in the heavy shadows as the building before them stands proud and silent.

She is still here. He sends the thought out into the world, only to be plucked from the darkness by his brother, silently watching the stone building before them.

Yes, I feel her also.

I fear they may be taking too long. By the time she returns, it may be too late.

There is nothing we can do yet. Time must have its fill. It has all happened before and I dare say it will all happen again. The world will shift in one of two ways, and we must allow it, whatever the cost.

Yes, but it does seem such a waste if she should not return.

They stand in unison, complete stone, watching the building looming in the darkness. Anyone else, Morseth and Trapper included, would pass by untroubled, but they were far too old and much too wise. Standing just outside of the lacing, they did not so much feel the magic at first, but the absence of it. From there it was only a matter of mind. Now, they felt the steady heartbeats of an army, unaware of what was to happen next or the importance of the girl within.

We must keep moving.

And so they do, turning their backs to the hidden fortress, begging it not to crumble.

Not yet.
